Abstract
1,105,542. Measuring speed, viscosity or temperature. HONEYWELL Inc. March 9, 1965 [March 16, 1964], No.10052/65. Headings G1K and G1S. [Also in Division G3] Hydrodynamic apparatus for sensing angular velocity or fluid-viscosity comprising a housing 11 with a plane surface 12 having two orifices therein terminating passages 13, 15 equidistant from an axis 17 in the plane 12 and with a flange 18 whereby the housing 11 is mounted close to a body 25 rotating about an axis parallel to axis 17 with the plane 12 close to the periphery 26 whereby the passages 13, 15 sense the increased and decreased pressures which occur in ambient fluid ahead of and behind the tangent point 27 during rotation as a hydrodynamic pumping action is set up. The differential pressure may be measured or applied to actuate a fluid switch (see Division G3) for control purposes which may be retroactive e.g. to maintain a constant angular velocity in a turbo-jet engine. Elongated orifices, Fig. 4 (not shown) are needed to increase the flow to a fluid amplifier. Formulae are given showing the relationship between dimensions, viscosity, pressure and velocity. Because the viscosity and clearance ‘h’ depend upon temperature, the apparatus can be used to measure temperature if the speed and diameter R are held constant. When designing the apparatus for measuring speed or viscosity, the coefficients of expansion of the housing 11, and body 25 may be chosen to vary ‘h’ so as to compensate for the effect of temperature on viscosity. A clearance of 0À005 inches was found successful.
