Abstract

A process of separating straight chain olefins from hydrocarbon mixtures comprises adsorbing the olefins on a molecular sieve, suitably a zeolite, which has previously been saturated with ammonia or a C1-2-alkylamine, and then eluting the adsorbed olefins with ammonia or a C1-2-alkylamine. The entire process is carried out in successive cycles at a uniform temperature of 20-200 DEG C, and preferably 100-180 DEG C. In a particular embodiment, two beds of a 5 zeolite are used. The hydrocarbon mixture is passed over one bed, while ammonia or amine is passed over the other to effect desorption of straight chain olefin adsorbed previously and to pretreat the bed for a subsequent adsorption cycle. In another embodiment, three zeolite beds are operated cyclically. Over the first is passed the gas mixture to be separated, over the second is passed ammonia or amine to desorb the straight chain olefins previously adsorbed, and over the third is passed treated gas from the first stage, thereby desorbing ammonia or amine and removing the remainder of the straight chain olefins from the treated gas. Particular applications include the separation of butene-1 and butene-2 from C4-hydrocarbon mixtures. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 842,431.
