Abstract

Uranium and thorium carbides are prepared by intimately mixing a uranium or thorium halide with carbon and aluminium or with aluminium carbide, reacting the mixture for several hours in an inert atmosphere or in vacuo at a temperature of at least 1200 DEG C. and recovering the uranium or thorium carbide. The tetrafluoride, tetrachloride or the trichloride of uranium may be used, and the carbon may be in the form of graphite. In an example UF4 graphite and aluminium are mixed in an inert gas atmosphere, pressed into tablets, preferably with the aid of a camphor-in-methanol binding agent, degasified in vacuo to remove the binder and then reacted by heating to at least 1200 DEG C. in an atmosphere of purified argon. Further heating at 1300 DEG -1600 DEG C. in vacuo may be employed to eliminate the aluminium fluoride crust and surplus aluminium. Plutonium carbide is similarly prepared (see Division G6).
