Abstract

1,111,776. Packaging-machines. ANDERSON BROS. MANUFACTURING CO. 28 Nov., 1966 [30 Dec., 1965], No. 53207/66. Heading B8C. A stack of collapsed tubular cartons obliquely disposed in a magazine 21 (Fig. 3) having lateral carton guides 56 and 57 extending transversely to a conveyer path 22, is urged forward against a stop 65, from which the foremost carton is removed into the path 22 by a gripper 23, with which movement a device 711, 95 co-operates to open and square the carton. As described, the cartons are obliquely stacked between the guides 56, 57 of the magazine 21, attached to which are fingers 711 (7111) which engage the rear-side upper and lower flaps C1, C11 respectively as the carton is moved by the gripper 23, thereby partially erecting it. The conveyer 22 includes two spaced-apart guide rails 48, 49, mounted for reciprocation along which are slide plates 51 and 52 respectively. When the slide plate 51 is retracted, three suction cups 82a-82c of the gripper 23 are forwardly spring- urged to respectively grip the upper flap b1, end panel b and bottom flap b11 of the carton, the side panel a of which is deflected relative to the end panel b by a plate 95 as it is moved off the stack. When the slide plate 51 is moved forward, the suction cups 82a-82c are cammed into a retracted position and an L-shaped support member 126, pivotally mounted on the slide 51, is cammed forwards to fold in the lower trailing flap c11 (Fig. 10A) and to advance the carton until it is supported between the guide rails 48, 49. The flap d11 is drawn outwards by a finger 181 to facilitate the infolding of the flap c11. The leading flap a11 is folded in by a flap guide 139. The upper flaps of the carton are spread open by a spreader 28, which is urged downwards upon extension of the plate 51. The leading and trailing flaps a1, c1 are held down by a stationary depressor 171 (Fig. 3) as the carton is advanced along the conveyer 22, during which the bottom flaps b11, d11 are closed by a conventional folding mechanism (31), (Fig. 1, not shown). At a filling station, the carton is lifted by an elevator (33) to surround a filling nozzle (32), after which the other flaps are closed by a folding mechanism (34).
