Abstract
1,111,806. Automatic frequency control systems. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Dec., 1965 [12 Dec., 1964], No. 52554/65. Heading H3A. In an automatic tuning arrangement comprising a tuning device which is mechanically moved by a motor, under control of a detuning quantity derived from a frequency discriminator, the control circuit is provided with positive feedback, of coupling factor greater than unity, a threshold being provided, when the detuning is small, at which the feedback is interrupted. This ensures that the tuning is rapidly corrected if the error is at all appreciable. A control voltage from discriminator 1 is fed via resistors 15, 16, 17 to two amplifiers comprising complementary transistors 18, 19 direct coupled to output transistors 22, 23 respectively, which feed tuning motor 29 via compensating resistors 26, 28 respectively. According to the polarity of the control voltage one or the other of the amplifiers is energized, but delay diodes 24, 25 in the emitter circuits of the output transistors 22, 23 respectively, cause the output to remain zero until a threshold is reached. Positive feedback over capacitors 36 or 37 and a corresponding series diode 34, 35 which restricts the sign of the feedback then causes a rapid build up of output and an enhanced initial energization of the motor 29. The rate of energization is determined by capacitors 38, 39 shunting the output circuits of transistors 22, 23 respectively. Diodes 40, 41 shunting the inputs to transistors 18, 19 respectively and each poled in opposite sense to the corresponding transistor input, adjust in conjunction with resistors 16, 17 respectively, the control signal level at which the motor 29 will run continuously after the positive feedback has ceased. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) capacitors are not provided to apply positive feedback to the amplifiers; instead the outputs are fed to a varactor diode so as to initially increase the tuning error and so ensure a large value error and strong energization of the tuning motor. This arrangement provides a final fine tuning after movement of the motor has ceased.
