Abstract

A lacquer composition comprises (A) a lacquer component containing chlorinated rubber with a 60-70% by wt. Cl content; cyclorubber; methyl, ethyl, benzyl, hydroxethyl, methylene or carboxymethyl cellulose; cellulose propionate, butyrate, acetobutyrate or nitrate; a homo or copolymer of an acrylic ester with 1-18 C atoms in the alcohol moiety optionally with an unsaturated polyester, drying oil or alkyd resin; a copolymer of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride with vinyl acetate or ethylene; a drying oil; a styrenized alkyd resin; or a butadiene-styrene copolymer and (B) from 5-100% based on the weight of (A) of chlorinated terphenyls containing 20-65% Cl, which are obtained by chlorination of a mixture of terphenyls containing 0-5% o-terphenyl and 0-1% diphenyl, in addition to m- and/or p-terphenyl. A specific lacquer is based on cellulose acetobutyrate, in xylene/ ethyl acetate.ALSO:A light-stabilized lacquer composition comprises (A) a drying oil as lacquer component and (B) from 50-100% based on the weight of (A) of chlorinated terphenyls containing 20-65% of Cl, which are obtained by chlorination of a mixture of terphenyls containing 0-5% o-terphenyl and 0-1% diphenyl, in addition to m and/or p-terphenyls.ALSO:Mixtures of terphenyls which also contain diphenyl are chlorinated in the presence of ferric chloride, using chlorine gas. The product, which may contain 20 to 65% by weight chlorine (e.g. about 54%), is purified by distillation under reduced pressure in the presence of sodium carbonate and Fuller’s earth.
