Abstract

Novel copolymers of ethylene and/or an a -olefin of formula CH2=CH-R1 and a norbornene compound of the formula where R1 is an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms and R11 is a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, are prepared by contacting the monomers with (1) an organoaluminium compound of the formula AlRnX3- n, wherein R is a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, X is a halogen radical, and n is between 1 and 2, (2) a vanadium compound in which at least one group selected from halogen, acetylacetonate, alkoxide, cyclopentadienyl and an organic acid residue, is bonded to the vanadium and, optionally, (3) a compound of the formula RIVSOmY, wherein RIV is a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, which may have inert substituents attached thereto, Y is a halogen radical, and m is 1 or 2. In the Examples, (1) an ethylene-propylene-5-isopropenyl-2-norbornene terpolymer is prepared using an ethyl aluminium sesquichloride/vanadyl trichloride catalyst, and the terpolymer vulcanized by conventional techniques, (2) an ethylene-propylene – 5 – isopropenyl – 2 – norbornene terpolymer is prepared using a diethylaluminium chloride/vanadium triacetylacetonate catalyst, (3) as in (2) but using triethyl orthovanadate, (4) an ethylene-butene-1-5-(11-ethyl-ethenyl)-2-norbornene terpolymer is prepared using a triisobutylaluminium / aluminium bromide/vanadium tetrachloride catalyst, (5) an ethylene – propylene – 5 – isopropenyl – 2 – norbornene terpolymer is prepared using an ethylaluminium dichloride / benzenesulphonylchloride / vanadyl trichloride catalyst, and the terpolymer vulcanized, (6) as in (5) but using p-toluene-sulphonyl chloride and triethylorthovanadate, (7) as (5) but using methanesulphonyl chloride and vanadyl acetylacetonate, and (8) an ethylene-5 – (11 – ethyl – ethenyl) – norbornene – 2 copolymer is prepared using an isobutyl aluminium dichloride / p – toluenesulphonyl chloride/vanadium tetrachloride catalyst.
