Abstract

1,112,144. Valves. AUTOMATIC SWITCH CO. 15 April, 1966 [12 May, 1965], No. 16504/66. Heading F2V. [Also in Division E2] A solenoid – operated valve comprises a hollow valve body incorporating a valve seat 22, a valve member 24 slidably mounted in said body, a spring 27 urging said valve member towards said valve seat, a solenoid 25 effective upon said valve member to lift it from said valve seat, said valve body being provided with a recess 29 and said valve member being provided with an opening 31, said opening and recess being so located that the former moves to a position alongside the latter when said valve member is moved to a valve opening position a ball 32 mounted in said opening and movable radially into and out of said recess when said opening moves alongside the same, said recess being of less depth than said ball diameter, and fastening means for applying and discontinuing pressure on said ball tending to move the latter outwardly, whereby intrusion of said ball into said recess brings it to a fastening disposition wherein it rests upon a shoulder 30 defined by said recess and prevents movement of said valve member towards said valve seat said fastening disposition being maintained as long as said pressure is applied to said ball, said valve member being provided with an axial bore and said fastening means comprising a shiftable rod 34 in said bore, a wedging element 33 carried by said rod and shaped to engage said ball and push it outwardly and a trip solenoid 37 and spring 35 co-operatively effective to control the shifting movement of said rod. In the construction shown there are two balls and the spring 35 constantly urges the rod 34 in a direction away from the valve seat whereby the wedging element pushes the balls into the recess under the influence of the spring 35 when the valve member is moved to the valve opening position upon energization of the solenoid 25; energization of the trip solenoid 37 causes its armature 38 to engage the end of the rod 34 which moves the rod towards the valve seat and so enables the ball to move inwardly into the opening 31 and so clear the shoulder 30 to enable the spring 27 to move the valve member to close the valve.
