Abstract

Graft polymers have (1) a copolymeric backbone derived from (a) a major amount of at least one monomer providing one of the following recurring units: or wherein the R’s, which may be the same or different, each represent hydrogen, halogen or an alkyl radical of not more than 8 carbon atoms and in the unit of Formula 3 the two vicinal R’s may, together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, form a cycloaliphatic ring, or a substituted said recurring unit in which the substituents are non-aromatic and inert in a polyamide grafting reaction, the said recurring or substituted recurring units containing not more than 10 carbon atoms and (b) a minor amount of at least one comonomer providing recurring alkylene units of not more than 10 carbon atoms, said alkylene units having a single pendant organic radical which contains a single monofunctional acid group or a salt or ester of such a group and (2) a plurality of polyamide grafts each attached via its terminal nitrogen atom to the acid, salt or ester group of said pendant radical and each graft having the recurring unit where R1 is a polymethylene radical of at least 5 methylene groups and X is an integer of at least 2. Monomer (a) is e.g. butene, heptene, decene, ethylene, propylene, cyclopentene, cyclohexene, butadiene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene-1,3, tetrafluorethylene or chloroprene. Monomer (b) may be (meth)acrylic acid or an alkyl (meth)acrylate. The amino compound grafted on is e.g. a monoamino-monocarboxylic acid such as e -aminocaproic acid, 11-aminoundecanoic acid or 12-aminododecanoic acid; or esters, amides or lactams of such acids, e.g. e -caprolactam, ethyl-e -aminocaproate, e -aminocaproamide, lauryl lactam, ethyl-11-amino-undecanoate or 11-aminoundecanoamide. In the examples, graft polymers are formed from a copolymer of ethylene and ethyl acrylate or acrylic acid and e -caprolactam by a melt-polymerization process, the product being a mixture of nylon 6 and the graft copolymer, the former only being soluble in hot trifluoroethanol.
