Abstract
1,113,910. Ceramic seals. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 Dec., 1966 [7 Dec., 1965], No. 54123/66. Heading B3V. A method of sealing a ceramic closure 2 in the aperture 3 of a hollow ceramic body 1, e.g. a crucible for manufacturing and tempering alloys, chemical reactions, crystal growing &c., comprises pressing on the closure to react pressure developed in the body 1 during heating, uniformly heating the abutting portions of the closure and the body to fuse the closure to the body, and cooling the assembly while maintaining the pressure at least until the ceramic has solidified. The ceramic may be alumina, magnesium oxide or, as shown, mullite, and the fit of the closure is improved by grinding the parts together with, or without, mullite powder as a grinding agent. After removing the grinding powder the body is rotated in a holder 4 and heated by oxyacetylene burners A, B or a ring burner, the closure being pressed against the body by a rod 7 in a bearing 8. In a further example, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the method is applied to sealing a rod (13) in the neck of an ampoule 11.
