Abstract

1,114,562. Core constructions for synchronous machines. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. 8 Feb., 1966 [15 April, 1965], No. 49378/65. Heading H2A A reluctance motor has a rotor 3 which includes stacks of magnetically anisotropic laminations 5 arranged generally parallel to the machine axis and lying in the paths 4 of magnetic flux between the poles of the single or polyphase wound stator 1. The laminations are secured either by radial bolts, Fig. 3 (not shown), or by enclosing the ends and periphery of the rotor in die-cast material, Fig. 4 (not shown), which also fills space 7 between the laminations. The lamination stacks are constructed by winding strips of cold rolled grain-oriented sheet steel on a former, cutting at 11 and shaping the ends of the individual stacks at 13. In modifications, more than one stack of laminations may provide parallel flux paths over each pole span, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), and a similar construction may be used for a 2-pole rotor, Fig. 9 (not shown), with the spaces between each stack being filled with non-magnetic electrically conductive material which can act as the starting winding. Variable motor speeds may be obtained by using a pole charging winding and the rotor may be external to the stator. Permanent magnets may be embedded in the rotor.
