Abstract

1,114,613. Gas blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. 11 Jan., 1966 [15 Jan., 1965], No. 1176/66. Heading H1N. A gas blast circuit breaker comprises a sealed tank 11 containing SF 6 ; an arc shoot 24 in the tank and comprising a plurality of insulating arc extending plates 25 ; and a puffer 16 arranged to blow the arc towards the plates 25. The arc is struck between contacts 14, 15 carried by a pair of insulating bushings 12. One bushing carries a resistor assembly 51 one terminal of which is connected to fixed contact 14; its other terminal is connected to one of the plates 25 so that a portion of the arc is shunted by the resistor and rapidly extinguished to insert the resistor in series with the remainder of the arc which is then readily extinguished at current aero. The piston 28 of the puffer 16 is driven by springs 29 and is coupled to an operating linkage 43 which is also coupled through an insulating link 48 to the movable contact 15. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the piston is coupled to the movable contact by a linkage contained within the tank 11. In another modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the piston and the movable contact are rigidly connected together by an insulating link (481) and move in the same direction. The plates 25 may be of P.T.F.E. and the arc shoot may be lined with the same material.
