Abstract
1,117,653. Ceramic-metal seals; brazing. RADIO CORP. OF AMERICA. 29 July, 1965 [27 Aug., 1964], No. 32453/65. Headings B3R and B3V. A sealed structure comprises a multi-layer sheet-metal member 10, Fig. 1, having an edge 12 brazed to a flat surface of a ceramic member 16, the composite member 10 having a thermal expansion response in a direction normal to its thickness substantially matching the thermal expansion response of the ceramic member. The composite sheet may comprise a core 20 of Mo, Mo alloy or W, and outer layers 22, 24 of ferrous-Ni or Co alloys, stainless, or tool, steel between which and the core are layers 26, Fig. 3, of Ni diffused into the contiguous layers under heat (600-1000‹ C.) and pressure (5000- 25,000 p.s.i.) during formation of the composite sheet. Before brazing the seal with a Co brazing material 18, the joint-surface of the alumina ceramic 16 is metallized by using Mo salt and then plated with Ni. The thermal expansion response of the composite sheet is fixed by predetermining the thickness of outer layers 22, 24 of higher or lower thermal expansion response than that of the core 20 so that they assist or oppose expansion of the core. In an example, a composite sheet with a Mo core having a thermal expansion response of 4 mils p.i. at 800‹ C. and outer layers 22, 24 of Ni alloy having a thermal expansion response of 12À5 mils p.i., was given a nett response of about 6 mils p.i., the response of alumina, by making the core about three times as thick or the combined thickness of the layer 22, 24. The seal may be formed between a composite metal tube and a ceramic tube, or between a ceramic ring and a composite metal cup, Figs. 4 and 6 (not shown).
