Abstract
1,132,780. Bending glass sheets. LIBBEYOWENS-FORD GLASS CO. 7 Sept., 1966 [13 Sept., 1965], No. 39961/66. Heading C1M. Apparatus for bending glass sheets S includes opposed male and female mould parts 25, 26 having complemental shaping surfaces 27, 28 and mounted for relative movement to press a heated glass sheet S therebetween, the male mould part 25 being provided with a chamber 54 adjacent to and behind the shaping surface 27, means being provided for introducing heated gases under pressure through a pipe 56 into the chamber 54 to heat the surface 27. Preferably the heated air escapes through a plurality of holes 65 in the surface 27, the whole surface being covered by a pervious material 66 such as asbestos or glass cloth, so that a cushion of air lies between the shaping surface and the glass sheet S during bending. In the machine disclosed, the sheet S passes through a heating furnace (16), the bending apparatus in which the female, ring, mould 26 is pressed upwardly into engagement with the mould 25 and thence between blowing chests (23) to temper the glass. The hot gases for heating the chamber 54 are preferably heated by passage through conduits (57) lying across the heating furnace (16) each being separately metered if desired.
