Abstract

1,135,313. Treatment of Cu base alloy articles; oxidizing Cu alloys. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. Feb.24, 1966 [March 3, 1965], No. 8191/66. Headings C7A and C7U. Corrosion resistant copper base alloy articles are made by the following process:- 1. Alloying copper, optionally containing conventional amounts of impurities and alloying elements such as B, Mn, Zn and Be (except where Be is one of the alloying elements included as hereinafter set out), with 2-25% in total of two alloying elements with the ratio of the contents of the first and second additions being from 0À03-10 to 1, the first addition being Al, Ga, In or Be and the second addition being Si, Ge, Sn or Be (for Be as the second addition, Al must be the first). 2. Heating the alloy in an oxidizing environment (oxygen, air or a fused nitrate bath) for at least one minute at least 400‹ C. up to the solidus temperature of the alloy to form an outer oxide layer 25-500 Angstroms thick containing copper oxides and oxides of the addition elements and a second layer, immediately below the outer layer, at least 50 Angstroms thick and containing a discrete dispersion of a complex oxide including at least one of the addition elements, and 3. Removing the outer layer (e. g. by pickling or by mechanical buffing or polishing).
