Abstract
1,138,109. Amphibious vehicles. LANCIA & C. FABBRICA AUTOMOBILI-TORINO S.p.A. 14 Aug., 1967, No. 37297/67. Headings B7A and B7S. In an amphibious vehicle, for which the body forming the hull is so constructed as to provide the buoyancy necessary to support the weight of the vehicle and its maximum admissible load, the vehicle walls 1, 2, 3, (4) are provided with inflatable floats 6, 7, 8, (9) arranged externally of the walls and above the water line LG of the vehicle when under that load. Each float is associated with a plate 10 hinged to the vehicle wall above the float and when inflated the float holds that plate 10 in a transverse position. When the float is deflated the plate drops to enclose it. In use, the floats are inflated before the vehicle enters the water. Float 6 serves to lift the front of the vehicle as it enters the water after running downhill or down a bank. The floats in general ensure floating stability in rough water or with an unevenly distributed load.
