Abstract

[Also in Division H2] In apparatus for measuring the level of a liquid, as the level changes the tension in a wire 2 (Fig. 4) supporting a float 1 varies to disturb the balance of an arm 4 so that via contacts or a magnetic shunt mechanism a motor is driven in one of two directions to (a) rotate a drum 3 on which the wire is wound until a balance is again obtained and (b) to control a counter. In the embodiment described the continuous motion of a shaft 70 (Fig. 13) driven by the motor controls the stepping motion of a shaft 701 via a magnetic mechanism (see Division H2) the shaft 701 controlling the rotation of five decade wheels 28 (Fig. 9) of the counting mechanism. Transfer members between the decades are in the form of Maltese crosses. A magnet 29 on each wheel successively actuates relays 30 so that the registered count may be transmitted to a reading unit remote from the liquid. The reading unit comprises wheels 54, (Fig. 12) and ten coils 58 energized by the relays 30 so that as a rotor 55, 56 aligns itself with the magnetic field the correct digit is displayed. Display may also be effected by a Nixie-type mechanism, luminous projection of the digits or a rotator shutting mechanism.
