Abstract
1,147,399. Flash apparatus. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORP. May 24, 1967 [May 25, 1966], No.24219/67. Heading G2A. Photographic flash apparatus comprises discharge tube means, e.g., a pair of gas filled discharge flash tubes or strobotrons 10, 12 having starter electrodes 18, 20 supplied with high voltage pulses. Strobotron 10 is supplied from a capacitor 22, while strobotron 12 is supplied by a capacitor 24. The strobotrons are fired alternately by high voltage pulses supplied by a control circuit having a squarewave generator 32. The output from transistor 70 which is 180 degrees out of phase with the signal across resistor 60 is fed through coupling capacitor to a silicon rectifier 84. The signal from resistor 60 is fed through a coupling capacitor 62 to a silicon rectifier 66. The rectifiers 66, 84 alternately produce high voltage pulses 180 degrees out of phase, at the secondary coils 94, 107 of transformers 92, 106 respectively which are fed to the electrodes 18, 20. Triggering of strobotron 12 allows capacitor 24 to discharge to produce a light pulse of a width depending on the resistance of the strobotron and capacity of capacitor 24. When strobotron 10 is triggered capacitor 22 discharges until capacitor 24 is recharged, the time required to charge the capacitor 24 determines the duration of the light pulse. A time delay circuit 112 for controlling the collective output of the strobotrons has a silicon rectifier 114 in parallel across the pulse generator. Electrode 120 of rectifier is connected to a wiper arm 122 of a potentiometer 124 and to a capacitor 126 of a timing network. Thus, rectifier 114 terminates the production of voltage pulses fed to the electrodes 18, 20 after a time which is a function of the values of capacitor 126 and potentiometer 124. The wiper arm (122) Fig. 2 (not shown) is varied by an arm (140) according to the focusing of objective lens 137. The flash apparatus is within a housing (46) carrying a reflector (148). Alternatively, the potentiometer 124, Fig.1, may be replaced by a photo-responsive element receiving light from the subject. In another embodiment resistor 46, Fig.1, is replaced by a resistor 156, Fig. 3, in series with a photo-conductor 158 receiving light through an optical fibre 161 from strobotrons 10, 12. The squarewave generator 32 may be replaced by a sawtooth wave generator or pulse generator to produce the required changes in voltage on the coils 90, 104 of transformers 92, 106.
