Abstract

1,149,301. Production of melamine. CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORP. 16 Jan., 1967 [10 Feb., 1966], No. 2330/67. Heading C2C. A process for synthesizing melamine from urea comprises heating the urea in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature greater than 320 C. and, after the catalytic reaction, adding a small proportion of water vapour to the aqueous mixture from the synthesis prior to cooling from the temperature above 320 C. to condense the melamine, the minimum amount of water vapour added being in the molar ratio of at least 1: 1 relative to the cyanic acid content of the gas. The water, which is preferably added as a spray, is suitably employed in an amount of from 1: 1 to 8: 1 molar relative to the cyanic acid content of the gas and the gas itself is suitably at a temperature of 340-425 C. The cooling step may be effected by employing an aqueous quench which is suitably the liquor obtained by separation from a slurry formed by the condensation of melamine in the liquor. An apparatus is described in which the above process may be carried out.
