Abstract
1,149,452. Sym – octahydroanthracene; anthracene. KOPPERS CO. Inc. 13 April, 1967 [22 April, 1966], No. 17105/67. Heading C5E. Sym-octahydroanthracene is produced by isomerizing sym – octahydrophenanthrene at 190-350‹ C. over a solid phase silica-alumina catalyst, e.g. 87% SiO 2 -13% Al 2 O 3 . The process may be conducted in the vapour or liquid phase, the pressure being varied as necessary, and the contact time being 0À01- 0À1 sees. or 10-180 minutes respectively. The equilibrium mixture of isomers produced may be cooled to precipitate most of the symoctahydroanthracene, which is separated, the residual mixture being recycled. The process may be used as one stage in an overall process for converting phenanthrene to anthracene. Phenanthrene is hydrogenated to sym-octahydrophenanthrene (e.g. using a nickel catalyst), the above isomerization carried out, and the sym-octahydroanthracene product then dehydrogenated to anthracene (e.g. using a Pd/carbon catalyst).
