Abstract
1,149,474. Power steering. DANFOSS A/S. 8 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 1967], No. 1060/68. Heading B7H. A hydrostatic power steering system comprises a double pressure fluid metering pump 3 operable through a lost motion clutch 2 by a steering wheel 1, the fluid being supplied from a pump 8 through the pump to a pair of series piston and cylinder devices 23, 24 mechanically connected together and to steering means 41. Rotary spool, valves 4, 5, 6 connected with the steering wheel occupy the neutral position shown when the wheel is stationary and the positions L or R according to whether the wheel is being turned to the left or right. When, for example, the wheel is turned to the right the pressure fluid is supplied to the left hand cavities of cylinders 23, 24 via lines 10, 11, 13, 16, 17, 21, and 10, 12, 14, 15, 18, 19. Fluid from the right hand cavities returns to the sump through lines 20, 22, 29, 30, 31. Should there be a leak between one cylinder and the metering pump 3 steering may still take place using only the other cylinder. The pump 3 comprises a toothed ring 33 driven by the steering wheel, two toothed wheels 34, 35, and a partitioning element 26. In a right hand turn with the wheels 34, 35 rotating in the directions indicated by the arrows, two suction compartments 37, 38 and two pressure compartments 39, 40 are formed, these being connected to pipes 13, 14 and 15, 16 respectively.
