Abstract
1,149,779. Magnetic printing. W. C. HELLER. 9 Nov., 1966 [9 Nov., 1965 (2)], No. 50219/66. Heading B6C. [Also in Division H1] The energization of a magnetic circuit comprising polepieces 5, 17, Fig. 1, causes a magnetic flux to pass through the gap 7 between the poles in which a magnetic image member 4, a non-magnetic material 8, a rotating disc shutter device 9 and a magnetic particle carrier box 13 are disposed. The flux causes the magnetic particles to adhere to the underside of the material 8 the image created by the adhesion depending upon the imagery of the member 4. The disc shutter device masks the material 8 only allowing passage of particles through the relevant shutter hole 9a. The material 8 is so chosen that the particles are caused to adhere to the underside thereof through lodgement within the interstices of the material. A milk bottle 82, Fig. 14, is imprinted through the development of a temporary magnetic particle image on the bottle facing side of a slidable carrier 83 which closes upon the bottle causing presentation thereto of the image. Adhesion is effected either by heat or through the application of adhesive to the bottle prior to printing. The particles may be heat fused to a glass bottle or, if the bottle is thermoplastic, through heat softening of the bottle walls. The non-magnetic material 8 may be polytetrafluoroethylene, polytetrafluoroethylenecoated, or silicone rubber, or resin-coated fibreglass. Other materials are natural, styrenebutadiene, nitrile or neoprene rubber or P.V.C. or polyurethane. Magnetic materials for use in making the magnet or cores and the magnetizable or magnetic particles can be any magnetic material known in the art. Examples are iron, cobalt and nickel and their alloys such as a 35 Co-65 Fe alloy; silicon steel; low carbon cast steel; high carbon cast iron; tungsten steel; ferrites such as barium ferrite, manganese zinc (or magnesium) ferrite.
