Abstract

1,152,649. Joining metal and thermoplastic pipes. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 28 Dec., 1967, No. 58887/67. Heading F2G. A transition fitting for joining metallic pipe to thermoplastic pipe comprises the following successive concentrically-disposed, coextensive layers: (a) a metal tubular structure 1, (b) a layer of epoxy enamel 4 on a surface of the metallic tubular structure, (c) a fused layer 3 of adhesive copolymer over the epoxy enamel layer and (d) a thermoplastic tubular structure 2 fused to the adhesive copolymer layer. The adhesive copolymer comprises at least 50 mole per cent of units derived from ethylene and from 0À25 to 25 mole per cent based on the copolymer of units derived from one or more α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, the carboxylic acid units being randomly distributed throughout the copolymer molecules. A thermoplastic pipe, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, polyvinyl chloride, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, cellulose acetate, butyrate, polyolefins and acetal resins may be bonded inside a metallic coupling or a thermoplastic coupling may have a metal reinforcing sleeve. The bonded areas may be located in the middle of a tubular structure to provide substantial overlapping of unbonded areas. Specification 963,380 is referred to.
