Abstract

1,153,022. Polymer latices. MONSANTO CO. 20 March, 1967 [21 March, 1966], No. 12870/67. Heading C3P. Polymer latices, suitable for opacifying products such as liquid detergents, hair creams and floor waxes, comprise the polymerization product of (a) an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (b) an at least diolefinically unsaturated compound and (c) a vinylidene monomer, wherein the polymer particles of the latex comprise from 60-90% by weight of an inner polymer composition and 10-40% by weight of an outer polymer composition orientated to the surface of the particles, the outer polymer composition comprising from 24-70 mol. per cent of component (a), from 0À6-3À0 mol. per cent of component (b) and the balance of the outer composition being component (c). Preferably, the inner polymer composition comprises component (c) alone, or together with oomponent(a) and/or component (b). The lances can be obtained by polymerizing, in aqueous emulsion, a monomeric material capable of yielding the inner polymer composition and subsequently polymerizing a monomeric material capable of yielding the outer polymer composition. The process may be effected batchwise in two separate steps, or continuously wherein the composition of the monomer charge is suitably adjusted at appropriate stages in the process. If desired, a homogeneous product can be obtained by making the inner polymer composition the same as the outer polymer composition. In examples the inner polymer compositions comprise (i) styrene-methacrylic acid, (ii) styrene, (iii) styrene-acrylonitrile, (iv) methyl methacrylate, (v) styrene-methyl acrylate, (vi) styrene dibutyl fumarate and (vii) styrenemethacrylic acid-divinyl benzene; and the outer polymer compositions comprise (i) styrenemethacrylic acid-divinyl benzene, (ii) methyl methacrylate-methyacrylic acid-ethylene dimethacrylate, (iii) styrene-methacrylic acidethylene dimethacrylate and (iv) styreneacrylic acid-diallyl fumarate. The monomers of these compositions are polymerized in aqueous emulsion containing sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate and potassium persulphate, and when polymerization is completed the latex is neutralized by addition of NH 4 OH.
