Abstract

1,153,142. Tubular heat exchangers. COURTAULDS Ltd. 24 Aug., 1966 [25 May, 1965], No. 22153/66. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger comprises tubes of flexible thermoplastic film and consists of an outer tube 3 carrying a liquid to be cooled and one or more coolant carrying tubes 6 disposed within the outer tube. An additional coolant e.g. atmospheric air, may surround the outer tube. Figs. 3 and 4 show a heat exchanger for cooling and crystallizing liquids, comprising inner and outer flattened coaxial polyethylene tubes 8 and 9, the coolant liquid flows into tube 8 through a narrow tube 18 and distributer 19 (see also Fig. 5), and the liquid to be cooled flows into space 27 between the tubes 8 and 9 via tubes 32 and fish tails 28 and 29. The tubes 8 and 9 and the distributer 19 are made from sheets of polyethylene, 10 and 11, 14 and 15, and 20 and 21, welded together along their vertical edges, their upper ends being supported by rods 12 and 13, 16 and 17, and 22 and 23, respectively. The lower edges of sheets 20 and 21 are welded together at spaced intervals to provide a slotted outlet for the distributer (see Fig. 5). The lower end of tube 8 has a liquid tight seal over a stand-pipe 38 through which the coolant flows out and the lower end of tube 9 communicates with a tank 36 for collecting crystals and/or cooled liquid. The space 27 may be sub-divided into separate passages by welding. Two pinch rods 33 and 34 press the sheets of thermoplastic together, giving an even distribution of liquid across the tubes and sealing the space 27. In a second embodiment three inner tubes are provided within one outer tube. The heat-exchanger may be used for crystallizing Glauber Salts or making ice. The supply of coolant may be interrupted to allow crystals to be freed from walls. In another embodiment (Figs. 7 and 8), the inner and outer tubes with the latter divided into two passages are formed by two adjacent tubes (43, 44) of flexible thermoplastic film with their facing surfaces longitudinally welded together at laterally spaced positions (45, 46), the coolant flowing through the two adjacent tubes which constitute the outer passages and the liquid to be cooled flowing through the inner tube constituted by a tubular passage (47) formed by the facing surfaces of the tubes 43, 44 between the welds.
