Abstract

1,155,268. Water tube boilers. G. W. B. BOILERS Ltd. 17 Aug., 1966 [26 July, 1965], No. 31762/65. Heading F4A. A steam or hot water, water tube boiler, having a surrounding casing (not shown) is built up from a plurality of abutting or closely spaced water tube units, each of which includes a circular inner ring 1, a hexagonal outer ring 2 having a greater resistance to fluid flow than the inner ring, and lower and upper connecting tubes 3, 4 respectively which connect the unit to one or more lower liquid inlet, and upper vapour or liquid outlet headers 7, 8 respectively. A apace within the assembled inner rings forms a cylindrical now path for the hot combustion gases whilst the annular space between the assembled inner and outer rings forms a return gas pass. Each unit also includes asymmetically disposed semi-hexagonal intermediate tubes 9, 10 which form a staggered barrier in the return gas pass when alternate units are reversed in relation to one another on assembly. Alternatively, two types of unit, each having differing intermediate tubes, may be used to form the staggered barrier. The boiler so formed may be provided with a horizontal or vertical steam or steam and water drum (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). The drum may be located at the end of the assembled water tube units and be provided with flame and fire tubes (13, 14, Fig. 5) to communicate with the gas flow paths formed by the water tube units. Alternatively, after passing through the flame tube (13) the gases may be led through a water tube wall circumscribing part of the drums circumference (Fig. 6) and formed of tubes connected directly or via arcuate headers to the upper and lower parts of the drum.
