Abstract
1,160,508. Metal pipe bundles sheathed in plastics. KABEL UND METALLWERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE A.G. 15 May, 1968 [16 May. 1967], No. 23066/68. Heading F2P. A method of manufacturing a pipe bundle cable consisting of copper pipes stranded together and surrounded by a plastics sheath, and which is intended to be used for the pneumatic transmission of measurements, control pulses, &c., wherein the copper pipes are stranded together and annealed in the form of a stranded bundle, and the plastics sheath is applied either during, or after, the annealing operation. The plastics sheath, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, can be extruded over the copper pipes as they pass, while still warm, out of an annealing device. Alternatively, the annealing and application of the plastics sheath may be a combined operation. Before the plastics sheath is applied the spaces between the stranded pipes may be filled by additional plastics material. The annealing may be carried out by direct current resistance annealing, by induction annealing, or by an annealing furnace, the annealing being carried out in a protective atmosphere, e.g. of water vapour. As shown, one storage reel 3 is located outside, and six are located inside a stranding basket 2 which is rotated to deliver as stranded bundle of seven copper tubes 4 successively to an electric annealing plant 5 and a plastics extrusion press 6 in which a sheath of thermoplastics material, e.g. P.V.C., is applied. The pipe bundle is then cooled, e.g. in a water bath, not shown, and wound up on a drum 7.
