Abstract

1,172,625. Brazing. WHITTAKER CORP. 19 Jan., 1967, No. 2992/67. Heading B3R. An assembly for use in brazing tubes, rods &c. at above 900 F. comprises a hollow openended metal fitting, brazing material positioned in two cavities in the inner surface of the fitting, at least two bodies of exothermic material in contact with the outer surface of the fitting and an ignition means to ignite the exothermic material. An assembly for brazing two metal tubes 10, 11, Fig. 2, comprises an insulating shell 1 of ceramic, inorganic fibres &c. within which are arranged two rings 2, 4 of exothermic material connected by a bridge 3 of exothermic material. An insulating sleeve 5 is positioned between the rings 2, 4 on the outer surface of the metal fitting 6, the fitting containing two spaced rings 7 of brazing material in its inner surface. An igniter 8 is provided with leads 9. The tubes 10, 11 are pushed into the fitting 6 and a battery is connected to the leads 9 to ignite the exothermic material which causes the brazing material to flow. The insulating shell 1 is then removed to leave the fitting 6 brazed to the tubes. In a modification an outer steel shell 13, Fig. 6, is provided to hold insulating fibrous material 15, e.g. mullite fibres and to confine insulating layers 21, 22 and insulation 20. The rings 25 of exothermic material are within the shell 13 with an ignition ring of powdered exothermic material 26 sealed in metal foil 27 positioned between the innermost rings 25, the rings being arranged on the metal fitting 30 provided with brazing material rings 31 in its inner surface. An igniter 28 is positioned in the powder 26. After firing, the assembly except the fitting 30 is removed. A thin sheet of copper, nickel, tantalum or molybdenum may be provided between the exothermic material and the fitting and the preferred exothermic material comprises in parts, magnesium 19À9, nickel oxide 51-84, manganese oxide 18À24, aluminium 4À24 and manganese dioxide 5À36, while the fittings may be of copper, brass, ferrous metal or copper-nickel alloy. The brazing material may or may not contain flux and inert gas, e.g. argon may be supplied to the interior of the tubes being brazed.
