Abstract

1,172,650. Automatic frequency control. BENDIX CORP. 11 July, 1968 [24 Aug., 1967], No. 33062/68. Heading H3A. A digital frequency synthesizer comprises a first variable-frequency oscillator 10 responsive to a first error signal V 1 for generating a synthesizer output frequency f o , and second 12 and third 18 variable-frequency oscillators responsive to second V 2 and third V 3 error signals for generating second f 2 and third f 3 frequencies respectively. A first frequency spectrum generator 13 generates harmonics of the second frequency f 2 , means responsive to said harmonics and the synthesized output frequency f 0 , i.e. phase detector 15, generating the second error signal V 2 . A second frequency spectrum generator 25 responsive to the third frequency f 3 generates harmonics thereof; means responsive to the third frequency harmonics and the synthesized output frequency f 0 , i.e. mixer 26 generates a complex frequency spectrum from which a desired frequency is selected by filtering means 27, i.e. a low-pass filter. The output of a source of reference frequency 29, i.e. a crystal oscillator is compared with the selected frequency in means 28, i.e. a phase detector, to generate the first error signal V 1 . In the embodiment, the third error signal V 3 controlling the frequency of the third variable frequency oscillator 18 is generated by dividing the frequency f 2 by N in a first divider 20, which is ganged to a second divider 19 which divides the frequency f 3 by N – 1. Dividers 19, 20 comprise cascades of binary counters; the output of divider 19 is applied to a pulse and ramp type phase detector 21 comprising pulse former 21 – 1 to generate narrow pulses which open bilateral AND gate 21 – 3. The output of divider 20 is applied to pulse former 21 – 2 which comprises a ramp generator, the ramp voltage being applied to gate 21 – 3. During the intervals gate 21 – 3 is open a voltage sampled from the ramp voltage is fed to memory 21-4 which may comprise a low-loss capacitor whose discharge path is blocked when the gate is closed, to produce the third control voltage V 3 via filter 22 which removes undesired A.C. components. The first oscillator 10 may comprise a backward wave microwave oscillator, phase detector 28 may like detector 21 be of the pulse and ramp type, while phase detector 15 comprises a diode ring demodulator.
