Abstract

1,172,683. Locating faults in laid cables. ELECTRICITY COUNCIL, N.H. POOL and A.E. LIVESEY. July 28, 1967 [July 28, 1966], No.34013/66. Heading G1U. A break in an underfloor heating element is located by feeding an r.f. signal of at least mc/s in frequency into one end of the conductor to set up a standing wave pattern therein between the line end of the conductor and the break and traversing a capacitive pick-up along the path of the element to locate the break as revealed by a rapid falling off of the picked up signal strength as the break is passed. The r.f. signal may be modulated at an audio frequency or the picked up signal may be mixed with the output of a local oscillator to produce an audio frequency which is fed to headphones. An adjustable impedance matching II network is provided for coupling the r.f. generator to the element. The capacitive pick-up comprises a stub antenna of adjustable length and may be connected via a tuned circuit, or directly if the field strength is high enough, to the detector and indicator. An inductive pickup may be provided to obtain an approximate position of the break which is then located accurately using the capacitive pick-up.
