Abstract

1,175,124. Respiratory apparatus. SOC. DE RECHERCHES TECHNIQUES ET INDUSTRIELLES. 14 Nov., 1967 [16 Nov., 1966], No. 51801/67. Heading A5T. [Also in Division B1] A tubular membrane dialyzer (see Fig. 3) comprises a plurality of units as shown in Fig. 1. Such units each comprise several tubular membranes 7 passing through spacer members 8, which are out of register by about 90 to ensure that the tubular membranes are not orientated parallel to the direction of flow. The units are sealed at each end by plugs 10, and dialyzing liquid enters and leaves by pipes 6, while the liquid to be dialyzed passes serially through tubular membranes 7 of the plurality of units. In order to assist this flow and to prevent static boundary layers from forming, excess pressure is sequentially exerted upon the dialyzing liquid in the severed units so as to flatten the tubular membranes periodically. Suitable membrane materials comprise silicone rubber, polytetrafluoroethylene, regenerated cellulose, celluose acetate or triacetate and microporous polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. The apparatus is particularly useful for oxygenating venous blood using oxygenated blood as the dialysing medium, but may also be used for purifying amino acids or proteins, or for concentrating fruit or fermentation juices, or in a diver’s breathing apparatus having a pump, for purifying and re-oxygenating exhaled air by dialysis against sea-water.
