Abstract
1,175,576. Tuned interconnectors for A.C. networks. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 June, 1968 [29 March, 1967], No. 14231/67. Heading H2H. An interconnecting arrangement between A.C. networks 1, 2 wherein an inductancecapacitance combination X1, XC is approximately series resonant when the networks are operating normally and which is detuned automatically when an excess current tends to flow in the interconnecting link due, for example, to a fault in one of the networks is provided with means whereby transient surge currents are suppressed and the return of the arrangement to normal stability assisted. When an excess current tends to flow in the interconnecting link the impedance of a path shunting the capacitor XC is considerably reduced by the alteration in the impedance of a non-linear element NL which is connected in series with two resistors R1, R2. Initially, when an excess current appears in the link the switch S, operated by a control unit C responsive to that current, remains open so that both resistors R1, R2 are effective to counteract any surge tendency in the link. After a predetermined time the unit C is effective to close the switch S whereby resistor R2 is short-circuited so stabilizing the operation of the network. After the fault has been cleared the unit C operates to open the switch S to re-insert resistor R2 into the shunt circuit whereby the return of the network to normal operation is expedited. The unit C may comprise an overcurrent relay with a built-in delay so that the switch S is closed after, say, three cycles of the excess current flow. The switch S may be of any suitable type such as a vacuum switch, a semi-conductor element or a therminonie device and may also be current directional. The non-linear element may comprise a saturable reactor or a linear reactor in series with a spark gap device, the spark gap comprising elements similar to the switch S. In another embodiment two capacitors are provided with the switch S in a connection between the point between the capacitors and the point between the resistors. In yet another embodiment the element NL is in series with one resistor only, the second resistor being in series with the switch S which combination is in shunt with X1 and XC.
