Abstract
1,175,752. Overload release clutch. OERLIKON-BUHRLE HOLDING A.G. 21 March, 1967 [25 March, 1966], No. 13239/67. Headings F2C, F2K and F2L. An overload release clutch comprises clutch members 19, 21 having Hirth-type teeth urged into engagement by a compression spring 38 acting through a sliding member 33, a toggle linkage 32, 31, and a thrust bearing 29, an overload torque causing sufficient axial movement of the member 19 to cause the sliding member 33 to pivot a bell-crank 34 about a fixed pivot 35 so that its arm 36 collapses the toggle, a compression spring 28 then disengaging the clutch and holding it disengaged. The disengaging torque can be adjusted by a screw 39 which loads the spring 38. In a lathe, an input shaft 10 drives the clutch member 19 via gears 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18 and a gear 23 formed on the member 21 meshes a gear 24 driving a pinion 26 meshing a rack 27 to move an apron 50 relative to a frame. A gear (51) (Fig. 2, not shown) meshing the gear 15 drives a cross feed mechanism through a second overload release clutch identical with clutch 19, 21. A single lever 46 movable in a cross slot 48, 49 controls normal engagement and disengagement of both clutches. The base 43 of the lever is connected as by link 42 to the centre pivots 41 of the toggles. With the lever 46 at the centre of the cross slot, both clutches are disengaged. Movement to either end of slot 48 engages the clutch 19, 21 for apron movement, and movement to either end of slot 49 engages the second clutch (54) for cross-feed.
