Abstract
1,177,241. Making bags. CLOUD MACHINE CORP. 10 Jan., 1967 [28 July, 1966], No. 1294/67. Heading B5D. [Also in Division B8] A web of material such as plastic, paper, cloth, or metal foil, is fed to a shaping or forming device, e.g. a device for folding the web along its centre line, the device being moved transversely of the web path in accordance with transverse movements of the web by the engagement of the web edges with guide means on the device so as to maintain a predetermined transverse relationship between the web and the device, i.e. so that the fold line is maintained in a predetermined position. The fold may be a U-shaped fold or a creased fold. As described, the device is employed in a machine for making packages containing, e.g. salt. The web 13 is fed from a roll 14 by feed-rollers 19-22, suitable braking means being incorporated to maintain the web under tension. The web edges are engaged by transversely-adjustable rollers 46-49 on shafts 40, 43 mounted on a frame 38 attached to and extending rearwardly of the folding device 23. The latter comprises a base-plate carried by a vertically-adjustable pivot shaft 26, and a wedge-shaped folding- head 50 tapering to a forming edge 51, mounted on the base-plate. Two approximately rectangular-sectioned blocks 61, 62 fixed to the base-plate provide edges 66, 67 adjacent to the edge 51 for guiding the folded web. A bracket 54 is screwed to the blocks 61, 62. Bolts 55, 56 attached to the folding head 50 engage slots 57, 58 in the bracket 54 to permit of vertical and longitudinal adjustment of the head. The engagement of the web edges with the rollers 46-49 causes the folding head 50 to be moved about the pivot 26 in accordance with transverse movements of the web to maintain the fold line centrally of the web. After leaving the folding device, the web 13 passes between rollers 73, 74 and around a heated seamer 76, projections 77 on which cause vertical seams to be formed in the web at spaced intervals. Rollers 83 then feed the web around a filling station 84 comprising circumferentiallyscalloped surfaces 85 and a similar number of funnel-shaped depressions 86. The pockets formed by the seams are maintained against the surfaces 85 by suction, and are opened by air streams. As each pocket passes beneath a hopper 88, a given quantity of material such as salt is released into the funnel-shaped depressions 86 and passes through openings 89 into the pockets. Subsequently the web is operated upon by a heat-sealer 91 to close the filled pockets, and by a cutter 95 for severing the separate pockets. Unfilled pockets, pockets with open tops, or a number of pockets in long lengths may be produced by disconnecting parts of the filling &c., apparatus.
