Abstract
1,183,289. Artificial resin paint composition. PRISMO SAFETY CORP. 12 July, 1968, No. 33377/68. Headings C3B and C3R. A traffic line paint sprayable when heated comprises in wt. per cent; resin binder, 12-22; pigments, 50-65; low-boiling solvents 7-23; higher-boiling solvents, 5-20. The resin may be: a short or medium oil-length glycerol or other polyfunctional alcohol alkyd having polyfunctional-alcohol phthalate resin content of 40-58% and oil content of 60-42%; said alkyd modified by phenol; a short-oil epoxyester resin with acid number < 2; or a short oil urethane ester. The low-boiling solvents boil at a temperature below that at which the paint is sprayed, and may be e.g. methylene chloride, cyclohexane, pentane, petroleum ether, isohexane, hexanc, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, trichloroethylene, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, isopropyl acetate, or benzene. The higher-boiling solvents have B.P. 200-400‹ F. and may be aromatic hydrocarbons e.g. toluene or xylene, with or without aliphatic hydrocarbons. The pigments may be a mixture and may include rutile or anatase TiO 2 , chrome yellow, carbon black, ground silica, natural or calcined clay, calcium sulphate, calcium carbonate, magnesium silicate, talc, mica, or glass spheres. Also present may be coumarone-indene hydrocarbon resin modifier and driers and additives. The composition may be applied to a road by pumping into a closed system at 100-150 p.s.i., heating to 140-250‹ F., releasing through a spray orifice, and applying auxiliary air-pressure to the material immediately it leaves the orifice. The composition dries almost immediately upon deposition. Reflective glass spheres may be dropped on the paint while it is still tacky.
