Abstract
1,196,892. Burners. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. 1 Jan., 1969, No. 154/69. Heading F4T. A burner nozzle, which can be used first to melt a cold charge and then rapidly converted to an oxygen lance, has four flexible vanes 11 each secured at one end 17 to a tube 3 and at the other end 18 to a sleeve 2, which is rotatably secured about a fixed inner tube 1 concentric with tube 3, so that rotation of the sleeve twists the vanes to impart a rotational component of velocity to fluid leaving the annular space 4 between the tubes. For melting operations, the vanes may be twisted, the tube 3 is supplied with oxygen or oxygen enriched air via a port 9, and the tube 1 is supplied with fuel, fluxing agents or other additives, mixing of the fluids near the outlet 24 being assisted by a Venturi 23. The shape of the flame depends on the degree of twisting of the vanes, and if the maximum imparted rotational component of velocity is greater than the longitudinal velocity, a region of reverse gas flow is produced beyond the nozzle, Fig. 4 (not shown). When the vanes are straight, extending longitudinally of the nozzle, and oxygen only is supplied to tube 3, the nozzle is used as an oxygen lance. A rotatable member 12 lies between two flanged parts 13, 14, is connected to the sleeve 2 and carries a handle (not shown) for effecting rotation of the sleeve. Member 12 is threaded on part 13 with a thread of such a pitch as to compensate for the shortening of the longitudinal distance between the ends of the vanes as they are twisted. Alternatively, Fig 2 (not shown), the sleeve 2 is made of two parts keyed together non-rotatably, for telescopic movement. A cooling system 5-8 is provided about the nozzle.
