Abstract
1,199,467. Frequency modulation receivers. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 16 Nov., 1967 [18 Nov., 1966], No. 52140/67. Heading H3R. The signal-to-noise ratio of a FM receiver is improved by demodulating with a locked-in oscillator 1 and using this oscillator to provide negative feedback and thereby reduce the frequency deviation of the I.F. signal. In the receiver illustrated the oscillator 1 is locked to the I.F. signal by means of a phase detector 3 and a narrow-band filter 5, and supplies the local oscillations to the mixer 7 via a frequency multiplier 8. If X is the multiplication factor of the multiplier, the compression factor is also X and the relation between the RF frequency fRF and the I.F. frequency f IF is f RF = (XŒ1)f IF . If a reference frequency fRef from source 10 is supplied to the mixer, the equation becomes f RF = (XŒ1) f IF Œf Ref , which allows more choice of parameters. The output signals may be derived from filter 5 but are preferably derived from oscillator 1 via limiter discriminator 14.
