Abstract

1,199,541. Luminescent materials and uses thereof. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 13 March, 1969 [15 March, 1968], No. 13365/69. Heading C4S. An alkaline earth magnesium silicate (ortho- or pyro-silicate phase) phosphor (xAO.yMgO. zSiO 2 ), is activated by divalent Eu and divalent Mn. The atomic ratio of the alkaline earth Ba, Ca or Sr to Mg may be between 3: 1 and 1: 2, atom ratio of A+Mg to Si between 4: 2 and 3: 2, and the atom fraction of Eu and Mn is 0À0004 to 0À4 and 0À0004 to 0À5, respectively. A preferred composition is A a Mg b Si c O d : Eu e +2, Mn f +2; a is 0À5 to 3À0; b is 1À0 to 2À0; c is 1À0 to 2À0; d is 4À0 to 8À0; e is 0À0004 and 0À4 and f is 0À0004 to 0À5. Specific phosphors include Ba 2À86 MgSi 2 O 8 : Eu 0À04 +2, Mn 0À10 ; (Ba 2À11 Sr 0À75 )- MgSi 2 O 8 : Eu 0À04 +2, Mn 0À10 +2; (Ba 1À36 Sr 0À75 Ca 0À75 )- MgSi 2 O 8 :Eu 0À04 +2, Mn 0À10 +2; Sr 2À86 MgSi 2 O 8 : Eu 0À04 , Mn+2 0À10 ; Ca 2À86 MgSi 2 O 8 : Eu 0À04 +2– Mn 0À10 +2; Ba 0À76 Mg 2 Si 2 O 7 : Eu 0À04 +2, Mn 0À20 +2; (Ba 0À38 Sr 0À50 ) MgSiO 4 : Eu 0À02 +2, Mn 0À10 +2; Ba 0À66 – Mg 2 Si 2 O 7 : Eu 0 . 04 +2, Mn 0 . 30 +2 and the preparations are described of Ba 2À83 MgSi 2 O 8 : Eu 0À02 +2, Mn 0 . 15 +2 ; (Ba 2 . 08 Sr 0 . 75 ) MgSi 2 O 8 : Eu 0 . 02 +2, Mn 0 . 15 +2; (Ba 1À33 Sr 0À75 Ca 0À75 ) MgSi 2 O 8 : Eu 0À02 +2, Mn 0 . 15 +2; (Ba 0À38 Sr 0À50 ) MgSiO 4 : Eu 0À02 +2, Mn 0À10 +2 ; Ba 0À76 Mg 2 Si 2 O 7 : Eu 0 . 04 +2, Mn 0À20 +2. The phosphor may be incorporated in a fluorescent lamp for plant nurturing purposes and the red and blue peak emissions (e.g. between 620 and 700 and 437 and 475 nm. respectively) may be controlled by compositional variations of the alkaline earth cations, the intensity varying as the Eu to Mn ratio. In preparations, the starting mixtures are dry blended using glass beads, fired in alumina trays at 600‹ C., fired at 1000‹ to 1300‹ C. in a 80% nitrogen- 20% hydrogen atmosphere, cooled and washed to remove the chloride flux (e.g. NH 4 Cl).
