Abstract

1,199,606. Polymerisation apparatus; mixing apparatus. CRAWFORD & RUSSELL Inc. 29 Sept., 1967 [16 Nov., 1966], ,No. 44532/67. Headings B1X and B1C. A material treatment apparatus, for example a polymerisation reactor has a plurality of internal concentric heat-exchange surfaces, surface 51 defining a draft tube and surfaces 52, 26 bonding an annular recirculation zone 24, a rotatable helical impeller 53 which may carry scraper blades 54, and a plurality of longitudinal wiper columns 29, 31 mounted for movement around and within zone 24 and positioned respectively near surfaces 26, 52, each of the wiper columns carrying blade means 32 or 33 extending inwardly to its associated heat exchange surface. In operation, the material is circulated through the draft tube and annular zone 24, the blades operating to scrape material from the heat exchange surfaces. Impeller 53 may have a pitch of between 5 and 20 and the distance b may be between 1/5 and 1/6 of the distance D (see Figure 2).
