Abstract
1,199,788. Disc brakes. BUDD CO. 2 Nov., 1967 [2 Dec., 1966], No. 49881/67. Heading F2E. In a ventilated disc brake for a railway vehicle wheel 16 having a braking disc 17 constructed of vanes 31 between two plates 27, 29 so as to cause outward flow of cooling air when the disc is rotated, the air flow is controlled by a cylindrical shutter 43 which is movable axially by an actuator 45 between a first position (Fig. 1) in which it blocks the flow and a second position (Fig. 2) in which it allows the flow. On applying the brake pads 21, 22 to the disc 17 air is admitted via input fitting 81 of the brake actuator 25, air line 77 and rotary fitting 79 to cylinder 57 so that the shutter 43 is moved axially to allow cooling air to pass through the disc 17. When the brakes are released a delay valve 83 delays the return of the shutter 43 to the closed position so that cooling air continues to pass through the disc. The shutter 43 is returned by springs 71 to the closed position after braking so as to avoid power loss due to the cooling arrangement.
