A grid electrode, for use in discharge tubes having a thorium cathode, such as transmitter tubes, is formed of a refractory metal, e.g. Mo or Ta, having a surface coating of Zr together with Fe or Ni or Co in an amount not greater than 10% by weight of the total weight. In an example the zirconium metal coating contains 5% by weight of metallic iron.
