Abstract

1,213,559. Sealed heating elements; space heating radiators; air heaters. THERMO ELECTRON CORP. 24 July, 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 35253/68. Headings F4B and F4S. A sealed heating element comprises an enclosure with an outlet at the top for waste gases, an inlet at the bottom for a gas/air mixture which is fed to a radiant element 19 through nozzles 17 and a perforated baffle 23 of inverted V-section mounted above the radiant 19 to cause jets of hot gases to impinge against the walls of the enclosure. The gas/air mixture may burn at the nozzles 17 to heat a metal mesh or other inverted V-section radiant, or the radiant element may be a perforated or porous refractory member, the combustion taking place near the surface of the radiant. A number of heating elements 11, Fig. 4, in the form of flat boxes, may be arranged within an air heating chamber, perforated baffles 41, 43 directing jets of the air to be heated against the walls of the elements 11 which are connected to gas/air supply manifold 44 and exhaust manifold 49. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the heating element is formed as an annular member, the air to be heated flowing over the inner and outer surfaces. The perforated baffle may carry nozzles in the holes, and the burner is provided with a spark or other igniter.
