Abstract

1,213,806. Siloxane modified carboxylic resins and copolymerization thereof. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 3 Oct., 1967 [3 Oct., 1966 (3); 7 Sept., 1967], No. 30295/70. Divided out of 1,213,803. Headings C3P and C3T. Siloxane modified polycarboxylic acid resins have a M.W. > 1000, and acid no. > 30, an electrical equivalent weight of 1000-20000 and 0À5-3À0 α-# olefinic unsaturation units per 1000 units of molecular weight. The siloxane constituent may be an acrylic siloxane containing at least three silicon atoms per molecule, e.g. of formula where n is at least 1, X is a C 1-8 monovalent hydrocarbon radical, a C 1-8 monovalent hydrocarbonoxy radical, OH or H, preferred are C 1-4 alkyl or alkoxy radicals. At least two of the X groups separated by a X-Si-O-Si-X linkage may be OH or alkoxy. The siloxane constituent may be cyclic, examples being trisiloxanes, tetra- and higher cyclic siloxanes. Up to 40% of the resin may consist of siloxane. The resin may be a polyester or an acrylic or vinyl resin. The resins are useful as binders for electrodepositable coating compositions which may comprise 85-99 % by wt. of the resin together with 1-15% of vinyl monomers, e.g. styrene or methyl methacrylate. The siloxane modified resins may be rendered water soluble by neutralization with a water soluble amine (including ammonia). The coatings may be cross-linked by electron beam radiation. Methods of electrodeposition are described in Specification 1,213,803. Specifications 1,159,119 and 1,159,552 are referred to.
