Abstract
1,213,812. Friction Clutches. BBA GROUP Ltd. 24 Jan., 1968 [3 Feb., 1967], No. 5321/67. Heading F2C. A friction clutch plate 5 for a single or multidisc clutch for an I.C. engine has an aggregate area of resin bonded asbestos friction material 23, on the or each frictional engaging surface, not greater than 30% and preferably between 10 to 20% of the swept area of the clutch. As shown, and in Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the clutch plates have clutch facing areas respectively totaling approximately 15% and 18% of the swept area, the clutch plates being radially split and resiliently deformed whereby the clutch pads 23, (25) are axially displaced each side of the plane of the clutch plate to provide a » mush » or cushioning effect during clutch engagement. The friction pads comprise proportions, by weight, of the following materials, asbestos fibre; powdered phenolic resin (200 mesh); carbon black; barytes; brass particles; cashew shell resin friction dust; graphite and copper powder.
