Abstract

1,213,834. Radio signalling. NEWSRAD Inc. 20 Sept., 1968 [28 Sept., 1967], No. 44793/68. Heading H4L. A repetitive programme intended for passengers on an aircraft, to be heard as they approach a stopping place, is broadcast on a super-audio frequency sub-carrier (e.g. 41 or 67 kc./s.) by a suitable local F.M. normal broadcasting station. The repetitive programme may be recorded on an endless magnetic tape and may comprise a start tone (e.g. 77 c/s.) for 2 seconds, introductory chimes for 3 seconds, news bulletins and other programme material, concluding chimes for 3 seconds, and a stop tone (e.g. 67 c/s.) for 2 seconds (Fig. 3, not shown). An F.M. tuner 58, Fig. 4, is controlled by a channel selector 66 in a remote unit 68, and its subcarrier output is amplified and demodulated in a unit 76. The audio output is fed through an amplifier 82, an H.P. filter 152, an adjustable attenuator 156, a normally open contact of a relay RLY-4, and a power amplifier 166 to loudspeakers 170, 170A &c. The H.P. filter 152 cuts off signals below about 100 c/s., including the control signals. The audio output of the unit 76 is also fed through a normally open contact of a relay RLY-1 to the parallelled inputs of two amplifiers 98, 100 which are tuned respectively to the start and stop tones. The unit 76 also provides an output at sub carrier frequency, which is fed through an amplifier 174, and a rectifier 178 to the coil of a relay RLY-2. When the aircraft is near the transmitting station the relay RLY-2 is operated and an » in-range » indicator 192 is energized through one of its contacts, whilst a circuit is prepared for the operation of the relay RLY-1 through the other of its contacts. When a start switch 282 is subsequently depressed, the relay RLY-1 is operated, and is held by the closure of one of its contacts. A » start » indicator 200 is energized through a second contact, and the audio output of the unit 76 is connected to the amplifiers 98, 180 through a third contact. When the start tone is received, output from the amplifier 98 operates a sharply tuned filter 104, comprising a reed 108, so that input is applied to an amplifier 112. Output from the amplifier 112 is rectified and causes momentary operation of a relay RLY-4, which is held by the closure of one if its contacts, another contact completing the circuit for operation of the loudspeakers, so that the programme material is heard. Other contacts of the relay RLY-4 respectively complete a circuit for the energization of an » operate » indicator 270, and prepare a circuit for the operation of a relay RLY-3. When the stop tone is received the relay RLY-3 is momentarily operated by output from the amplifier 100 fed through a tuned filter 126, an amplifier 136, and a rectifier 140. The opening of two normally closed contacts of the relay RLY-3 respectively restores the relays RLY-1 and RLY-4, and the power amplifier 166 is disconnected.
