Abstract
1,220,911. Piston and rod packing. MESSIER. 3 Jan., 1969 [9 Jan., 19681, No. 495/69. Headings F2B and F2T. Piston or rod packing comprises an elastomeric sealing ring 5 of rectangular section and a ring assembly for preventing extrusion, the ring assembly comprising a supporting ring 6 of a relatively hard material and an interposed ring 7 having a hardness and an elasticity intermediate those of the supporting and sealing rings and having inclined parallel faces, one of which contacts the supporting ring. The rings 6 and 7 may be split jointed and in operation, the supporting ring is forced radially into contact with the surface to be sealed by hydraulic fluid acting on the inclined surfaces in the direction of arrow F. The sealing ring 5 may be made of co-polymers of butadiene and acrylic nitrile, polymers of chloroprene (neoprene) or copolymers of vinylidene-fluoride and hexafiuoropropene. The supporting ring 6 may be chamfered at 6a and made of resins of acetal, polyamide (nylon) with or without a charge of graphite, polycarbonates, polyphenylene-oxide polysulphones and polyimides. The interposed ring 7 may be made of P.T.F.E. with or without a charge of graphite, glass or molybdenum bisulphide. For double-acting arrangements, the ring assemblies 6, 7 are provided on each side of the sealing ring 5.
