Abstract
1,222,450. Devices for use in puncturing amniotic membranes. E. FISCHER [trading as DMB APPARATE BAU DR ING HANS MUELLER BERNHARDT], 15 Nov., 1968 [15 Nov., 1967], No. 54459/68. Heading A5R. A service for puncturing a membrane such as the amnion surrounding the foetus to facilitate the removal of a sample of fluid without tearing the membrane comprises a frustoconical member 1 formed with a central bore 2 having its lower end widened to allow the introduction of a hollow needle, said member being provided on its top end which contacts the membrane with a pair of concentric grooves 3, 4. The grooves are connected via passages 7 and 8 and flexible conduits 5, 6 to a vacuum pump and in use vacuum is applied successively to the grooves 3, 4. The vacuum is then released from the groove 3 and a central region of loose membrane xtends within the periphery of the groove 4. The needle is inserted through this loose membrane and the fluid is withdrawn through the hollow needle. The member 1 may be of stainless steel or plastics material.
