Abstract

1,223,732. Removal of hydrogen sulphide from gases. INSTITUT FRANCAISE DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. 29 July, 1968, No. 36120/68. Heading C1A. A gas containing hydrogen sulphide is contacted with a liquid phase containing at least one phosphoric ester (as defined below), and at least one alkanolamine (as defined below): the solution is treated with a molecular-oxygencontaining gas, and the sulphur separated. The phosphoric esters are of the formula PO(OR) 3 where R may represent a hydrocarbon group with at least 3 carbon atoms, a group of formula -(R1O) n -R2 where R1 is a hydrocarbon group of 2-3 carbon atoms, R2 is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group, preferably of 1-5 carbon atoms, and n is an integer. The alkanolamines have the formula NR3R4R5, where at least one R group is of the formula -CpH 2p OH, where p is an integer from 2-6, the other groups being hydrogen atoms, alkyl groups with 1-18 carbon atoms, or a -C r H 2r – OH group, where r is an integer from 2-6, and the -C p H 2p – and -C r H 2r – groups may contain an internal -O- between two carbon atoms. Alkanolamines which are highly soluble in the phosphoric esters are preferred. The process may be carried out in two steps, or the contact of the gas with the liquid phase and the step of oxidizing the resulting solution may be carried out simultaneously. The alkanolamine may be used at 0À1-50% of the total weight of phosphoric ester and alkanolamine. The temperature may be 0-100‹ C., and the pressure 1-100 atmospheres. The phosphoric esters cause the water produced in the oxidation to form a separate layer, which may be simply removed, e.g. by decantation.
