Abstract

1,226,878. Carbon fibres. HITCO. 12 July, 1968 [12 July, 1967], No. 33432/68. Heading C1A. Carbon fibres are made by continuously and radiantly heating e.g. to above 800 C., in a non- oxidizing atmosphere an advancing non-conductive carbonaceous strand, suitably having carbon content of 50-85% wt., by means of a resistively heated conductive carbon fibre which is adjacent thereto. In a preferred embodiment a cellulosic strand, which may be coated with a polymeric material, is fed from a spindle over guide rollers 17, 18, at a rate between 2 and 100 feet/minute into closed chamber 11, which is flushed with an inert gas suitably N 2 entering. conduit 15, and then is passed over grooved electrodes 12, 13. The strand is passed over the electrodes-in a complete loop and passes out to a take-up reel via guide rollers 19, 20. The arriving strand portion 10a is nonconductive and as the portion 10b passes between electrodes 12, 13, it is adjacent to the conductive portion 10d which is resistively heated to 1000- 3200 C. and portion 10b is thereby radiantly heated to a temperature of at least 800 C. and pyrolized to bring the carbon content to above 85% wt. The portion 10b is heated for 1/50-10 seconds and is conductive by the time it arrives at electrode 13. Strand portion 10c is resistively heated, thereby increasing the carbon content to as highas 99% by the time the strand returns to electrode 12. Stress may be applied to strand portion 10e: The method may be used for one or more strands inthe form of single fibres, tapes, webs or sleeving. .
