Abstract

1,228,883. Hydromechanical variable speed gear; torque converter. VOITH GETRIEBE K.G. 6 Sept., 1968 [9 Sept., 1967], No. 42417/68. Headings F2C and F2D. In a hydro-mechanical variable speed gear for a vehicle wherein a torque-splitting planet train 3 divides the torque between a hydrodynamic power path including a torque converter 6 and a mechanical power path 8 for a low speed range and at a predetermined output speed a centrifugal governor valve 16 supplies pressure liquid to a brake 24 which holds the impeller 5 of the torque converter for a high speed range, the internal pressure in the torque converter which opposes brake engagement is reduced in the high speed range by a throttle valve 21 in the converter filling duct 20a, 20b. An engine-driven pump 18 supplies pressure liquid through ducts 20a, 20b to the interior of the torque converter 6 and through a duct 27a to the governor valve 16. A lever 17 increases the spring loading on the governor valve 16 with throttle pedal depression and thus increases the speed at which ratio shift occurs. When the output speed is sufficient to cause rightward movement of the governor valve spool to the position shown pressure liquid is supplied through ducts 27b, 25 to engage the brake 24 and to the upper chamber of the throttle valve 21. Equal pressures on both sides of a piston 22 permit a spring 28 to move a throttle pin 22a into an orifice 29 to throttle the torque converter filling duct 20a, 20b and thus reduce the pressure in the torque converter. The orifice 29 is in a spring-loaded piston 31 which maintains a predetermined ratio between the supply pressure and the internal pressure in the torque converter during high speed range. A one-way clutch 11 prevents the turbine being driven from the output during the high-speed range. A reverse gear 14 is provided in series with the hydromechanical gear.
